Fort Kochi to the spice hills of Thekkady, then the backwaters of Kumarakom, a slow arc through Kerala, mostly by water.
Arrival in Fort Kochi
Welcome at Eight Bastion, a contemporary-colonial heritage hotel. An afternoon in Fort Kochi: the old spice markets, Jew Street and the synagogue, the Dutch Palace, and the Chinese fishing nets along the shore. The evening is at leisure.
Into the spice hills
A scenic drive through rice fields, rubber plantations, and the coffee, cardamom, pepper and tea estates of the Western Ghats. You arrive at Spice Village, settling into your own elephant-grass thatched cottage.
The village beside the forest
The reimagined tribal village beside Periyar forest, a spice garden walked with a guide, an evening cooking demonstration with the chef, and a cultural performance as the day closes.
Into the Periyar wilderness
A morning trek through the Periyar wilderness with park rangers, a spice-garden tour with the resident naturalist, and a second cooking demonstration, the day paced to the forest rather than the clock.
Arriving by water
A drive, then a boat transfer arriving directly at Coconut Lagoon on Lake Vembanad, a heritage property reachable only by water. A Keralan cooking class, and an evening cultural performance.
The backwaters, unhurried
Morning yoga and meditation, bird watching with the resident naturalist, a village-life experience, an afternoon by the pool, and a sunset cruise on a converted rice boat.
